Ancient City of Side

The Ancient City of Side is a significant port city located on the southern coast of Turkey, in the Manavgat district of Antalya province. With a rich history dating back to the 7th century BC, Side was one of the most important settlements in the Pamphylia region.

History:

Side was founded in the 7th century BC by Greek colonists from the Aeolian region. Due to its strategic location, the city became one of the most important harbor cities of Pamphylia. Alexander the Great conquered Side in 333 BC, introducing Hellenistic culture. Later, the city came under the rule of the Ptolemies, Seleucids, and Romans.

During the Roman period, especially in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, Side experienced its golden age as a major commercial center.

Notable Structures:

Theater: A Roman-era amphitheater with a seating capacity of 15,000–20,000 people, making it one of the largest and best-preserved ancient theaters in the region.
Temple of Apollo: Built in the 2nd century AD, this seaside temple offers a spectacular view, especially at sunset.
Agora: The commercial and social hub of the city, providing valuable insights into daily life during antiquity.
Nymphaeum (Monumental Fountain): Located near the main entrance of the city, this grand fountain showcases the water engineering of the Roman era.
City Walls and Gates: The defensive walls and main gates surrounding Side reflect the military strategies of the ancient city.

Today, Side is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its ancient ruins, beautiful beaches, and modern amenities. Walking through the ruins allows tourists to experience history firsthand while also enjoying the Mediterranean coast.

The Ancient City of Side is open to visitors year-round. The spring and autumn seasons are ideal due to the mild weather conditions. At the entrance, the Side Museum exhibits artifacts excavated from the region, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the city's history.
